One of the earliest decisions organisations face is whether OT asset discovery should be handled internally, delivered by an external specialist, or shared between the two. Each approach has strengths and limitations that are important to understand.

‘OT asset inventory’ and ‘OT asset discovery’ are often used interchangeably. But they are not the same thing, and treating them as equivalent often leads to gaps in visibility and misplaced confidence.

Operational technology environments are not static. So, whilst a one-off OT asset discovery exercise is great for establishing your existing security profile, passive OT monitoring combined with continuous asset discovery is much better at maintaining an up-to-date view of what is present and how it behaves, without interfering with operations.

A meaningful OT asset discovery exercise should account for all assets that influence the behaviour, availability, and security of operational systems — not just the most visible control equipment.
